Minutes, February 19, 1999

Helen Bechdel for Mark Van Horn

Present: Peter Schneeman, Kate Brennan, Lisa Horlein (Arts Administrator), Dave Eggler (Treasurer), Colina Jordon, Bob Fenichel, Helen Bechdel, Paul and Cheryl DeCusati, Jim and Gay Dunne, Shyamoli Plassman, Romayne Naylor (President)

Locale: Adam & Art gallery.

Call to Order: Meeting called to order by Romayne at approximately 8:00 PM.

Minutes: In the absence of Mark Van Horn, Helen Bechdel volunteered to take minutes. Romayne introduced Shyamoli, a new member. Minutes were approved by Jim, seconded by Bob Fenichel, and accepted.

Treasurer: Dave Eggler distributed the financial report. We have received the PCA grant. The Film Forum program amount is $1,600. The Garver Fund contributed $500. We have $2,000 in money market funds. In May, when the CD is due, it will go into the money market fund.

Arts Administrator: Lisa Horlein passed around correspondence. WPSX-WPSU has asked if we want to send representatives to their on-air fundraising event February 27 to March 24. Romayne suggested putting out a call on E-mail to see who is available and to contact the station to inquire what time slots are open. Discussion followed about the value of the publicity the organization would receive. Jim suggested that he could download a design for t-shirts that would help to increase name recognition.

Thanks to Dave and Lisa, we are on line: bhca@vicon.net.

Lisa Horlein reported on an arts administration workshop (sponsored by the PA Rural Arts Alliance) she attended. She highlighted tips she learned to help increase public awareness of our organization. Discussion brought out that we are often confused with other similar-sounding organizations. Horlein said that she knows changing the name would require some effort. Dave would have to file with the Federal Court. Peter Schneeman explained the history of the name. Its purpose was to bring together other groups and possible future groups as a corporation. Currently, a Penn State senior level marketing course could take on the assignment of improving our image, including a logo. Schneeman moved and Brennan seconded that we open this possibility to the marketing class.

True Fisher and Romayne Naylor wrote a letter to the Centre Daily Times correcting the impression that Victorian Christmas is a joint effort rather than a BHCA event. As far as BHCA members are aware, this article has not been published yet.

Lisa Horlein has received correspondence from PCA regarding a Rural Development presentation to be held March 19th in Altoona. PCA is requesting arts organizations to participate. Suggestions for this event included the videotape of Sara Hopkins' American Song recital and Rob Gannon's show on George Gray Barnard. Their deadline is March 8th. Melady Kehm volunteered to represent BHCA, and manage our video set-up. She and Lisa will work together on this.

BHCA Gallery at the Gamble Mill: The next exhibit will be artwork from children of the elementary schools of Bellefonte Area School District. Colina Jordan suggested we come up with a children's menu. Lisa Horlein suggested we have an activity for the kids, such as decorating name tags. A musical performance was also suggested as a tie in. Jordan, Plassman, and Horlein volunteered to manage these efforts.

Old House Fair: No report.

Summer Sounds: The committee will meet on Wednesday, February 24 with Sandy Johnston. Their current goal is to bring in new people to train with established members who will eventually let the new members take over. Melady asked for suggestions for groups that would appeal to younger audiences.

Film Forum: No report.

Library Concerts: Jim announced the next concert would be Walter Wells in a performance of art songs including a premiere of works by Bruce Trinkley. The next concert will be Victorian Brass with Gay Dunne as guest pianist and a young narrator. This program will be family oriented.

Victorian Christmas: No report. No members present.

Garden Club: No report. No active members present.

Local Government Grant: Lisa has sent in the award agreement.

Building Lighting: The committee will meet at Adam & Art gallery at 7:30PM on February 24. A Penn State senior level class will present results of their study. Members of HARB will attend.

Old Business:

New Business: "Heart & Soul," a senior art exhibit will be held at the Bellefonte YMCA from March 13 to April 17. There will be an opening reception Friday March 19, from 4PM to 7PM. Several BHCA members have artworks on exhibit at this show.

Adjournment: Gay moved and Dave seconded that the meeting be adjourned. The meeting ended at 9:23PM.
