Meeting of September 16 2005

Home of Leeshaun & Kevin Musick

518 E. Curtin St., Bellefonte PA

Present:  Romayne Naylor, president; True Fisher; Dave Eggler (Treasurer); Bruce Eggler; Leeshaun Musick; Kevin Musick; Ziggy Coyle; David Bauchspies; Michelle Montes; Anna Sloan; Susan Gephart; Sharon McCarthy; Colina Jordan-Seeley; Ralph Seeley; Leeann Seeley; Jim Dunne; Gay Dunne; Mark Van Horn; Kitty Wunderly, Arts Administrator.

1.   The meeting was called to order by Romayne at 7:30 p.m.

2.   The minutes of the meeting of July 22, 2005, were reviewed. Sharon moved to accept the minutes as presented; seconded by True; unanimously approved.

3.   Treasurer’s report (end of webpage): Dave presented his report and added some comments: BHCA ended up ahead for the fiscal year 2004/05. Victorian Christmas 2004 did well financially; Summer Sounds 2005 had a paper loss of $400. A substantial expense was associated with the Local Government Grants administrative process, with no offsetting income. This is a contribution from BHCA to community arts. Dave said that there is $2,112 in a certificate of deposit from the Project for the Performing Arts that has been offered to us; Dave suggested treating it as a grant and making it a line item called “Performing Arts Fund.”  Gay made a motion to put the money from the PPA into a new Performing Arts Fund; seconded by Susan; unanimously approved.

True moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report; seconded by Gay; unanimously approved.

4.   Arts Administrator’s report: Kitty said that Rick Hirsch, a State College composer who had sought BHCA’s help in getting additional funding for his Bellefonte-inspired new work, has succeeded in finding sufficient monies for a fall performance at the Garman. BHCA helped by acting as a conduit for an anonymous donation through the Centre County Community Foundation.

The recent publicity mailing for the “Food For Thought” exhibition at the Gamble Mill was the largest in memory: 698 pieces.  A final version of the design for the pictorial cancellation for the Victorian Christmas fundraiser cover has been tentatively approved by the U.S. Postal Service, and a mockup of the envelope was passed around for all to see.

The second BHCA Local History Flyer has been completed, written by Kitty. The subject is architect Anna Wagner Keichline.  Copies were passed around.

5.   Committee reports:

Gallery at the Gamble Mill: Sharon reported that the new exhibition, “Food for Thought III,” was hung on September 24.  Nine artists are particpating.  The reception on September 27 was very well attended. The first-ever full-color promotional postcard was admired by all, but Colina objected that the work featured on the card was not credited.  Michelle said she didn’t mind, it was her painting but she thought the point was to encourage people to just come to the exhibition and see everyone’s work.

The call for exhibitors for the 2006 Mill exhibitions was sent to newspapers, the Art Alliance, and individuals, with a deadline of October 15 for sample submissions as slides or in digital form. Jim said we should not even ask for slides anymore, everything should be digital.

Susan mentioned that the Centre County Farmland Trust has been having artworks done and is looking for a place to exhibit them.

Summer Sounds:  Kitty said that the committee will be meeting in March 2006 to decide next summer’s program.

Film Forum: No report.

Sunday Afternoons at the Library:  The opening performance will be on October 16, Broadway Cabaret.

Victorian Christmas Arts & Crafts Show:  True gave the dates of this year’s show: Saturday and Sunday, December 10-11, at the YMCA and newly at the American Philatelic Center (match factory). The mailing of applications to prospective crafters is being prepared. The Bush House, not used for the arts & crafts show this year, may host the opening ceremony, children’s activities, and Santa.  Shuttles will run both days of the show between downtown and the match factory.

Talleyrand Park Committee:  True said that a gift of almost $3,000 from Mrs. Elmer Decker has been received to fund three iron picnic tables to match the new benches in the Park.  The Centre County Community Foundation has provided funding for two others. The tables have been ordered.  Also, True did fundraising and advertising sales for a new printing of the historical walking tour map.  It is at the printer.

6.   Old Business

Bellefonte Historical Railroad: Romayne said that she and Kitty met with RR officer Cecil Giscombe, to express BHCA’s willingness to be of some help in the organization’s current difficulties, with no definite result. The meeting was very short because Cecil could not stay, and he has not communicated since.  The RR had a public meeting on September 12, no one from BHCA attended, but it seems they did get some volunteers and donations and may be remedying their problems.

7.   New Business

Funding Sources:  Kitty asked that anyone who knows of businesses or other entities that support nonprofit projects, especially with general administrative expenses, would let her know.  Project funding in general is easier to obtain than unspecified support. Names of any such sources are needed for this fall’s fundraising program.

BHCA 30th anniversary in 2006: This milestone will be reached in September.  Shall we have a public event to mark it?  Art in the Park, something in the match factory, or ???

A BHCA 30 Years Committee was organized: Gay, Michelle, Susan, Jim, True, and Romayne.

8.   Next meeting: Tentatively set for October 21 at the match factory, if possible.  Colina said she and Ralph could host the November meeting.

9.   Adjournment:  Dave moved to adjourn at 8:25 p.m.; seconded by Jim; unanimously approved.
